The Making of a French Legacy Set amid the countryside of Northern France, Le Creuset has been handcrafting cast iron cookware since 1925. This region of France has been involved in the casting of cookware for more than four centuries, with craftsmen passing their skills down from generation to generation. Drawing upon this time-honoured tradition, Le Creuset is still crafting cast iron cookware by hand. Cast iron has been recognised since the Middle Ages as one of the best cooking materials available. Even with today's wide choice of materials, cast iron still reigns supreme due to its versatility, good looks and ability to retain and spread heat evenly. Le Creuset uniquely combines traditional features and classic design to create cookware that caters for every culinary desire and social occasion. Production Steeped in History Time-honoured casting methods are incorporated with state-of-the-art production facilities to create world-renowned cookware. Every piece of Le Creuset cookware is formed in its own sand mould. Once a piece has been cast, the mould is destroyed and recycled for future use. Skilled craftsmen then clean and smooth the piece by hand to prepare the surface for the application of enamel. Throughout the production process, each piece passes through the hands of more than thirty craftsmen to ensure the highest level of quality is maintained. If an imperfection is detected, the piece is melted down and recycled for future use. Two layers of enamel are applied to all Le Creuset cookware. The initial, colourless ground coat protects against rust. A second coat of coloured enamel is then applied; giving the exterior its trademark colour and the interior a durable sand or matt black enamel finish. The rim is not covered with the second coat to allow a closer fit between the lid and base, enhancing self-basting properties of the piece. The enamel is then air dried before being vitrified at over 800°C to produce a highly durable and shock resistant finish. The high quality and lifetime of use that Le Creuset affords is a testament to the handcrafted and thorough production that each piece undergoes.
