IMPRESSIONS OF AUCKLAND WATERFRONT
LARGE SCALE WORK BY THE PAINTER KEN GARRETT
The
work in the impressionist style depicts the waterfront prospect of Auckland
on the southern shore of the harbour, showing the major features of the city
which form the character of this major southern hemisphere port. Maritime,
commercial and leisure pursuits have integrated in a unique and rapidly
changing scene at the beginning of the 21st century typified by a vibrant
mix of activities on the waterfront backed by a skyline of high rise towers,
distant volcanic cones and topped by the city’s Sky Tower .The work is the
result of considerable study, thought and planning over some years and
endeavors to capture not just the overall character and feeling of the city,
but also the ever changing and elusive quality of light which ensues from
winds which constantly sweep the atmosphere and alternately bathe it in sun
or bring the “long white cloud “that the first Maori settlers noted when
they arrived.
The
overall size of the work measures 4.6 metres long by 1.5 metres high,( 15
feet long by 5 feet high ) consisting of five panels of which four measure
900 mm wide by 900 mm high, and one central panel measuring 1000 mm wide by
1500 mm high. The work is executed in artist quality Dervan Matisse acrylics
made in Australia on archival quality Museum canvasses consisting of acid
free heavy duty hand stretched canvas with tailored corners mounted on fine
quality knot free hardwood stretchers with slot and tenon joints made in New
Zealand. The paintings are guaranteed true gallery quality. The paintings
